The Caribbean Charter Season: Your Winter Escape
As the Mediterranean season winds down in October, the world's finest charter yachts begin their transatlantic migration to the Caribbean, where the winter charter season — running from November through April — offers warm trade winds, turquoise waters, and some of the most beautiful cruising grounds on earth.
Why the Caribbean in Winter?
The Caribbean's winter season coincides with the dry season, when the northeast trade winds bring consistent 15–20 knot breezes, clear skies, and comfortable temperatures of 26–30°C. The sea is warm (26–28°C), the humidity is manageable, and the risk of tropical storms is negligible. It is, quite simply, the perfect time to be on the water.
The Major Charter Regions
The British Virgin Islands (BVI): The most popular Caribbean charter destination, offering protected waters, short passages between islands, and iconic spots like The Baths on Virgin Gorda, the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke, and the pristine beaches of Anegada. The BVI is ideal for first-time Caribbean charterers.
St. Barths and the Leeward Islands: St. Barths is the Caribbean's answer to Saint-Tropez — a tiny French island with designer boutiques, world-class restaurants, and a harbour that fills with superyachts during the winter season. Combined with nearby St. Martin, Anguilla, and St. Kitts, it offers a sophisticated charter experience.
The Grenadines: For those seeking unspoiled Caribbean beauty, the Grenadines — Mustique, Bequia, Tobago Cays, and Mayreau — offer pristine reefs, deserted beaches, and a pace of life that feels decades removed from the modern world. The Tobago Cays Marine Park is a snorkelling paradise.
The Bahamas: The Exuma Cays offer the Caribbean's clearest waters and most photogenic experiences — swimming pigs, nurse sharks, Thunderball Grotto, and sandbars that emerge from impossibly turquoise shallows.
Antigua and the Windward Islands: Antigua's 365 beaches and English Harbour (home to Nelson's Dockyard) combine history with natural beauty. St. Lucia's dramatic Pitons and Dominica's volcanic landscapes add variety.
The Caribbean Social Calendar
Christmas and New Year: The peak of the Caribbean season. St. Barths' New Year's Eve celebrations in Gustavia harbour are legendary, with superyachts anchored bow-to-stern and fireworks over the water.
Antigua Sailing Week: Late April/early May. One of the world's great sailing regattas, attracting racing yachts and spectators from around the world.
St. Barths Bucket Regatta: March. A spectacular gathering of the world's largest sailing superyachts.
