Why the Amalfi Coast Is Best Experienced by Yacht

The Amalfi Coast is one of those rare places where the reality exceeds the photographs. The 50-kilometre stretch of coastline between Sorrento and Salerno is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of staggering beauty — vertical cliffs draped in bougainvillea, medieval towns clinging to impossible slopes, and water of such clarity that you can see the seabed 15 metres below your yacht.

By road, the Amalfi Coast is a narrow, winding, traffic-choked experience that can reduce even the most beautiful destination to frustration. By yacht, it is transformed. You cruise from Positano to Capri in under an hour, anchor in secluded coves that are inaccessible by land, and arrive at each town by tender — stepping ashore refreshed and ready to explore, rather than exhausted from driving.

The Amalfi Coast is also one of Italy's great culinary regions. The combination of fresh seafood, local lemons (the famous Amalfi lemons are a protected denomination), handmade pasta, and wines from the terraced vineyards of Ravello creates a gastronomic experience that your yacht's chef will complement with meals prepared aboard using the finest local ingredients.

The Jewel of the Amalfi Coast

Positano

Positano is the image that defines the Amalfi Coast — a cascade of pastel-coloured houses tumbling down a near-vertical cliff to a crescent of dark sand beach. From the water, the effect is mesmerising, and approaching by yacht provides the most dramatic first impression. The town is small enough to explore on foot, with narrow lanes lined with boutiques, ceramics shops, and restaurants that serve some of the finest seafood in southern Italy. The beach clubs — Spiaggia Grande and the more exclusive La Scogliera — offer sunbeds and service directly on the water.

Anchorage & Access

Anchor off Positano in 15–25m (sandy bottom, good holding in calm conditions). The anchorage is exposed to southerly winds — monitor weather carefully. Tender to the beach or the small pier. In peak season, the anchorage can be crowded; arrive before 10:00 for the best position.

Where to Dine

Da Adolfo (beach restaurant, boat access only), La Sponda (Michelin-starred, Le Sirenuse hotel), Il San Pietro (cliff-edge fine dining), Chez Black (beachfront institution).

Insider Tip

Book a table at Da Adolfo for lunch — it is only accessible by boat, making it a perfect yacht charter destination. The grilled mozzarella on lemon leaves is legendary.

The Island of Emperors

Capri & Faraglioni

Capri has been a destination for the wealthy and powerful since Emperor Tiberius built his villa here in 27 AD. Today, the island retains its magnetic appeal — the Faraglioni rock formations, the Blue Grotto, the designer boutiques of Via Camerelle, and the panoramic views from the Gardens of Augustus create an experience that is both natural and refined. For yacht charter guests, Capri is best experienced from the water: circumnavigate the island to see the dramatic coastline, anchor off the Faraglioni for swimming in impossibly clear water, and tender to Marina Grande for an afternoon exploring the town.

Anchorage & Access

Multiple anchorage options: Marina Grande (15–20m, sandy), off the Faraglioni (20–30m, rocky — use caution), Marina Piccola (15–25m, sheltered from northerly winds). The Blue Grotto is accessible by tender in calm conditions (morning is best).

Where to Dine

La Fontelina (beach club at Faraglioni), Da Paolino (lemon tree garden), Il Riccio (Michelin-starred, Capri Palace), Aurora (Piazzetta institution).

Insider Tip

Visit the Blue Grotto by tender early in the morning before the tourist boats arrive. Your captain can time the approach for optimal conditions. La Fontelina requires booking weeks ahead in summer.

The City of Music

Ravello

Ravello sits 350 metres above the sea, and its panoramic position has inspired composers, writers, and artists for centuries. Wagner composed parts of Parsifal here; Gore Vidal lived here for decades; the Ravello Festival draws classical musicians from around the world each summer. The town's two great villas — Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone — offer gardens of extraordinary beauty with views that extend across the entire Gulf of Salerno. For yacht charter guests, Ravello is a half-day excursion from the anchorage at Amalfi or Minori, reached by a winding road that is itself one of the great drives of Italy.

Anchorage & Access

Anchor at Amalfi or Minori (12–20m, sandy bottom). Tender to shore and arrange a private car to Ravello (20 minutes). Alternatively, the Bluebnc concierge can arrange a helicopter transfer from the yacht to Ravello's helipad.

Where to Dine

Rossellinis (Michelin-starred, Palazzo Avino), Belvedere Restaurant (Villa Rufolo views), Babel (contemporary Italian, Palazzo Avino).

Insider Tip

Attend a concert at Villa Rufolo during the Ravello Festival (June–September). The open-air stage, suspended above the coast with the sea as a backdrop, is one of the most spectacular concert venues in the world.

The Maritime Republic

Amalfi Town

Amalfi was once one of the four great Maritime Republics of Italy, and its cathedral — the Duomo di Sant'Andrea — reflects that former glory with its Arab-Norman architecture and dramatic staircase. The town is compact and walkable, with a lively piazza, artisan paper shops (Amalfi paper has been produced here since the 13th century), and restaurants that serve the coast's signature dishes: scialatielli ai frutti di mare, delizia al limone, and limoncello made from local lemons. The anchorage directly off the town provides easy access by tender.

Anchorage & Access

Anchor off Amalfi town in 12–20m (sandy bottom, generally good holding). The anchorage is well-protected from northerly winds but exposed to southerly swell. Tender to the town pier — a 2-minute ride.

Where to Dine

La Caravella (Michelin-starred, historic), Marina Grande (beachfront seafood), Il Teatro (contemporary Italian), Pasticceria Pansa (pastries since 1830).

Insider Tip

Visit the Museo della Carta (Paper Museum) to see traditional Amalfi paper being made by hand — a craft that dates back to the 13th century. The paper makes an exceptional souvenir.
