Owner FAQ

Answers to the most common questions from yacht owners about chartering with Blue Charter.

List Your Yacht

Getting Started

How do I list my yacht for charter with Bluebnc Yachting?

The process begins with a confidential consultation where we assess your yacht and discuss your charter objectives. Complete our online form at the List Your Yacht page, or contact our charter management team directly. We'll arrange a vessel inspection, develop a tailored marketing strategy, and have your yacht listed across our global network within 2-4 weeks.

What types of yachts does Bluebnc accept for charter management?

We manage motor yachts, sailing yachts, catamarans, explorer vessels, and gulets. Our minimum length requirement is 24 metres (80 feet), and we prefer vessels built in 2005 or later, or those that have undergone a significant refit. Each yacht is evaluated individually — if your vessel falls outside these guidelines, we encourage you to contact us for a personal assessment.

Can I still use my yacht privately while it's in the charter programme?

Absolutely. Most owners charter their yacht for 8-18 weeks per year and enjoy private use for the remainder. We work with you to block owner-use periods well in advance, ensuring your personal cruising plans are never compromised. Many owners find that charter revenue covers 60-80% of their annual running costs.

What is the minimum commitment period?

We recommend a minimum 12-month commitment to allow sufficient time for marketing, brand building, and seasonal booking cycles. However, we understand that circumstances change — our agreements include reasonable notice periods and are designed to be fair to both parties.

Do I need to convert my yacht to commercial status?

For most charter operations, yes — your yacht will need to comply with the relevant commercial yacht code (such as PYC or LY3) and carry appropriate commercial insurance. If your yacht is currently private, we guide you through the entire conversion process, including survey requirements, safety equipment upgrades, and flag state registration.

Revenue & Costs

How much charter revenue can I expect?

Charter revenue varies significantly based on yacht size, age, condition, crew quality, and operating region. As a general guide: a well-maintained 40m motor yacht in the Mediterranean can generate €800,000-€1.5M annually, while a 60m+ vessel can exceed €2.5M. We provide detailed revenue projections during our initial consultation based on comparable vessels in our fleet.

What are Bluebnc's management fees?

Our central agency fee is structured as a percentage of charter revenue, aligned with MYBA industry standards. The exact percentage depends on the scope of services, your yacht's size, and the level of management required. We operate on a performance-based model — when your yacht earns more, we earn more. Contact us for a confidential fee discussion.

What costs does the charterer cover vs. the owner?

Under the standard MYBA Charter Agreement, the charterer pays the charter fee plus an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA, typically 25-35% of the charter fee) that covers fuel, food, beverages, marina fees, and other running expenses during the charter. The owner is responsible for crew salaries, insurance, maintenance, and annual operating costs — many of which are offset by charter income.

How is the APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance) managed?

The APA is collected before the charter begins and managed by the captain throughout the charter period. All expenses are documented with receipts. After the charter, a detailed accounting is provided to the charterer — any unused APA is refunded, and any overspend is settled. Bluebnc oversees this process to ensure complete transparency.

Are there tax implications for chartering my yacht?

Yes, charter income is subject to taxation, and the specifics depend on your yacht's flag state, the charter operating region, and your personal tax residency. VAT implications vary significantly between EU and non-EU waters. We work with specialist maritime tax advisors to structure your charter operations efficiently and can provide introductions to qualified professionals.

When do I receive charter payments?

Charter payments follow the standard MYBA schedule: 50% deposit upon contract signing (typically 3-6 months before the charter), with the balance due 4-6 weeks before embarkation. Funds are held in a secure escrow account and released to the owner according to the agreed schedule, minus management fees and any applicable commissions.

Crew & Service

Can I keep my existing crew?

Yes. We work with your existing crew to elevate their charter service standards. Our crew development programme includes charter-specific training in guest relations, dietary requirements, activity coordination, table service, and emergency procedures. If crew changes are needed, we assist with recruitment through our extensive maritime network.

What crew training does Bluebnc provide?

Our charter crew training covers: guest preference management and personalisation, fine dining service and wine knowledge, water sports and activity coordination, charter-specific safety briefings, guest communication and discretion protocols, provisioning and menu planning, and post-charter turnover procedures. Training is conducted onboard and can be supplemented with shore-based courses.

How are guest preferences managed?

Before each charter, we collect detailed guest preference questionnaires covering dietary requirements, allergies, beverage preferences, activity interests, cabin configuration, music preferences, and any special occasions. This information is shared with the crew in advance, allowing them to personalise every aspect of the charter experience.

What happens if there's a crew emergency during a charter?

We maintain a 24/7 operations desk during all active charters. In the event of a crew emergency, we coordinate replacement crew from our network, arrange medical assistance, and manage all logistics to ensure the charter continues with minimal disruption. Our emergency protocols are established before the first charter.

Marketing & Bookings

How does Bluebnc market my yacht?

We employ a multi-channel marketing strategy: professional listing on BlueCharter.com with dedicated yacht page, Yachtfolio and CharterWorld platform listings, distribution to our network of 500+ charter brokers in 40+ countries, targeted digital advertising campaigns, social media content creation, attendance at major yacht shows (Monaco, Fort Lauderdale, Antigua), and direct outreach to our qualified client database.

Will my yacht appear on other charter platforms?

Yes. As your central agent, we list your yacht across all major charter platforms including Yachtfolio, CharterWorld, and other leading portals. We also distribute your yacht's availability to independent brokers worldwide. This multi-platform approach maximises visibility while maintaining consistent branding and pricing.

How are charter enquiries handled?

All enquiries are managed through our centralised system. We qualify each prospect, verify their charter experience and financial capability, negotiate terms within your parameters, and present only serious offers for your consideration. You retain final approval on all charter bookings — we never commit your yacht without your consent.

Can I approve or reject charter bookings?

Yes, absolutely. While we handle all enquiry management and negotiation, you retain final approval on every charter booking. We present each qualified enquiry with our recommendation, and you decide whether to accept. Many owners establish pre-approved criteria (minimum charter fee, preferred nationalities, group types) to streamline the process.

What reporting do I receive?

We provide comprehensive quarterly reports covering: charter revenue and occupancy rates, marketing performance metrics, enquiry analysis and conversion rates, competitive market positioning, crew performance feedback, maintenance recommendations, and forward booking pipeline. Annual reports include market outlook and strategic recommendations for the coming season.

Compliance & Regulations

What regulatory requirements apply to charter yachts?

Charter yachts must comply with their flag state's commercial yacht code (such as the UK's PYC/LY3, Cayman Islands Yacht Code, or Marshall Islands regulations), the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) for crew, SOLAS safety requirements, ISM Code for safety management, and local regulations in each operating jurisdiction. We manage all compliance on your behalf.

How does VAT work for yacht charters?

VAT on yacht charters is complex and depends on the charter location, embarkation/disembarkation ports, and the yacht's VAT status. EU charters typically attract VAT (rates vary by country, with some offering reduced rates for yacht charters). Non-EU charters may be VAT-exempt. We work with specialist maritime tax advisors to optimise your VAT position.

What environmental regulations should I be aware of?

Environmental regulations are increasingly important in the charter industry. Key areas include: MARPOL compliance for waste management, emission control areas (ECAs) in Northern Europe and North America, ballast water management requirements, and local marine protected area regulations. We ensure your yacht operates in full compliance with all environmental standards.

Does Bluebnc handle flag state inspections?

Yes. We coordinate all flag state surveys and inspections, maintain your yacht's commercial compliance documentation, manage certificate renewals, and ensure your vessel is always inspection-ready. Our compliance team stays current with evolving maritime regulations across all major flag states.

Maintenance & Operations

Does Bluebnc handle yacht maintenance?

While we don't perform maintenance directly, we coordinate all charter-related maintenance requirements, conduct pre-charter and post-charter condition assessments, recommend trusted shipyards and service providers, and ensure your yacht is always in charter-ready condition. We can also coordinate with your yacht management company if you have one.

What happens between charter seasons?

During off-season periods, we coordinate: annual maintenance and refit work, crew leave rotations and training, marketing material updates (photography, video), pricing strategy review for the coming season, and yacht show participation if appropriate. Many owners use this time for private cruising or repositioning.

How are provisioning and supplies managed?

For each charter, our operations team coordinates provisioning based on guest preferences, dietary requirements, and the planned itinerary. We work with trusted suppliers in every major cruising region to ensure the highest quality provisions. The captain manages day-to-day provisioning during the charter, with costs covered by the APA.

Can Bluebnc help with yacht repositioning?

Yes. We coordinate repositioning voyages between charter seasons (e.g., Mediterranean to Caribbean), including route planning, weather routing, fuel logistics, port clearances, and crew arrangements. We can also arrange delivery crew if your regular crew is on leave during repositioning.
