Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo, La Maddalena Archipelago — the Mediterranean's most exclusive yachting destination, explored from a superyacht.
The Mediterranean's Premier Yachting Destination
Sardinia occupies a unique position in the Mediterranean yachting world. While other destinations offer individual attractions — the glamour of Monaco, the nightlife of Ibiza, the beauty of the Amalfi Coast — Sardinia combines all of these elements with a natural landscape that is genuinely extraordinary. The Costa Smeralda, developed by the Aga Khan in the 1960s, set the standard for luxury coastal development, and Porto Cervo remains the social epicentre of the European yachting season.
But Sardinia's appeal extends far beyond Porto Cervo. The La Maddalena Archipelago, a national park of seven islands and dozens of islets, offers some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean — anchorages where the seabed is visible at 15 metres and the colours shift from pale turquoise to deep sapphire with the movement of the sun. The granite rock formations, sculpted by millennia of wind and sea, create a landscape that is both dramatic and serene.
For charter guests, Sardinia offers the rare combination of world-class infrastructure — marinas, restaurants, boutiques, beach clubs — with genuinely unspoilt natural beauty. A week-long charter can move seamlessly from the sophistication of Porto Cervo to the wilderness of the archipelago, from a Michelin-starred dinner to a barbecue on a deserted beach, from the energy of Phi Beach at sunset to the silence of a dawn anchorage in Cala Corsara.

Porto Cervo — the social capital of Mediterranean yachting since the 1960s.

The Capital of Mediterranean Yachting
Porto Cervo & Costa Smeralda
Porto Cervo is the undisputed capital of Mediterranean superyacht culture. Created in the 1960s by the Aga Khan, who recognised the extraordinary beauty of this stretch of northeastern Sardinia, the Costa Smeralda has evolved into the most exclusive yachting destination in Europe. The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS), founded in 1967, hosts the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup and the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta — events that draw the world's finest sailing and motor yachts. The promenade is lined with boutiques from every major luxury house, and the restaurants serve Sardinian cuisine elevated to international standards.
Anchorage & Access
Marina di Porto Cervo offers berths for yachts up to 100m+ (book well in advance for July/August). Anchorage outside the marina in 8–15m (sandy bottom, excellent holding). The bay is well-protected from prevailing winds.
Where to Dine
Matsuri (Japanese-Sardinian fusion), Gianni Pedrinelli (classic Italian, Piazzetta), Cervo Hotel Restaurant (terrace dining), Billionaire (Flavio Briatore's venue).
Insider Tip
Visit the Piazzetta in the evening — it is the social hub of Porto Cervo, where yacht owners, crew, and guests gather for aperitivi. The people-watching is as entertaining as any formal event.

Italy's Most Pristine Marine Park
La Maddalena Archipelago
The La Maddalena Archipelago is a national park comprising seven main islands and over 60 smaller islets, protected since 1994. The water here is of a clarity and colour that defies description — shades of turquoise, emerald, and sapphire that shift with the light and the sandy seabed below. Spiaggia Rosa (Pink Beach) on Budelli, though now protected from landing, can be admired from the water. Spargi, Santa Maria, and Razzoli offer anchorages of extraordinary beauty, with granite rock formations and white sand beaches that feel genuinely untouched. For yacht charter guests, the archipelago is the highlight of any Sardinia itinerary.
Anchorage & Access
Multiple anchorages throughout the archipelago. Cala Corsara (Spargi) — 5–10m, sandy, stunning. Cala Santa Maria — 6–12m, sandy, sheltered. Porto Madonna (La Maddalena) — 8–15m, good holding. Navigation requires care due to shallow areas and rocks — follow your captain's guidance.
Where to Dine
La Maddalena town has excellent trattorias — La Grotta and Il Gabbiano are local favourites. For a special experience, have your chef prepare a Sardinian feast aboard using ingredients from the La Maddalena fish market.
Insider Tip
Anchor at Cala Corsara on Spargi for the most spectacular swimming. Arrive early — by midday in peak season, the anchorage fills with day boats. The water is so clear that your yacht appears to float in mid-air.

Sardinia's Sunset Capital
Phi Beach & Baja Sardinia
Phi Beach is Sardinia's most spectacular sunset venue, perched on weathered granite rocks overlooking the La Maddalena archipelago. The natural amphitheatre of rock formations, the panoramic views, and the resident DJs create an atmosphere that is both dramatic and intimate. As the sun sets behind the islands, the sky turns from gold to pink to deep purple, and the music shifts to match the mood. For yacht charter guests, an evening at Phi Beach is an essential Sardinia experience — arrive by tender from your anchorage off Baja Sardinia, and return to the yacht under the stars.
Anchorage & Access
Anchor off Baja Sardinia in 8–15m (mixed sand and rock). Tender to Phi Beach's small jetty or the nearby beach. The approach requires care — follow your captain's guidance.
Where to Dine
Phi Beach serves excellent cocktails and light bites. For dinner, return to the yacht or head to Baja Sardinia's restaurants — Punta Est (seafood on the rocks) or Ritual (contemporary Mediterranean).
Insider Tip
Reserve a sunset table at Phi Beach at least a week in advance during July/August. Arrive by 7pm to secure the best position for the sunset. The cocktails are exceptional — the bartenders are among the best in Sardinia.

The Heart of the Costa Smeralda
Cala di Volpe & Liscia Ruja
The bay of Cala di Volpe is home to the legendary Hotel Cala di Volpe, designed by Jacques Couëlle in a style that evokes a traditional Sardinian fishing village — albeit one with a Michelin-starred restaurant, a private beach, and berths for superyachts. The surrounding beaches — Liscia Ruja (Long Beach), Capriccioli, and Romazzino — are among the finest in the Mediterranean, with fine white sand and water that transitions from pale turquoise to deep blue. This stretch of coast epitomises the Costa Smeralda experience: natural beauty enhanced, never overwhelmed, by discreet luxury.
Anchorage & Access
Anchor in the bay of Cala di Volpe (8–15m, sandy bottom, excellent holding). Liscia Ruja offers a long, open anchorage (6–12m, sandy). Both are well-protected from the prevailing mistral.
Where to Dine
Hotel Cala di Volpe (Michelin-starred), Romazzino Beach Restaurant (casual elegance), Nikki Beach Sardinia (beach club dining), Spinnaker (Porto Cervo marina).
Insider Tip
Liscia Ruja is the longest beach on the Costa Smeralda — anchor at the southern end for more privacy. The water is shallow for 50 metres from shore, making it ideal for families with children.
