From Royal Yachts to Global Charter Fleet
The history of yacht chartering is a fascinating journey from aristocratic exclusivity to a global industry that serves thousands of discerning clients each year. Understanding this history provides context for the traditions, standards, and culture that define modern chartering.
The Early Days: Royal and Aristocratic Yachting
Yachting as a leisure pursuit has its roots in the 17th century, when King Charles II of England received a yacht as a gift from the Dutch and sparked a fashion for pleasure sailing among the British aristocracy. For the next two centuries, yachting remained the exclusive preserve of royalty and the very wealthy, with vessels designed primarily for racing and personal cruising.
The concept of chartering — renting a yacht for a holiday — emerged in the early 20th century on the French Riviera, where wealthy Americans and Europeans began hiring local vessels to explore the Mediterranean coastline. The Côte d'Azur, with its glamorous ports and reliable summer weather, became the cradle of the charter industry.
The Post-War Boom
The modern charter industry took shape in the 1950s and 1960s, driven by several factors:
The Onassis effect: Aristotle Onassis's legendary yacht Christina O — which hosted everyone from Winston Churchill to Maria Callas — captured the public imagination and established the superyacht as the ultimate symbol of wealth and sophistication.
The Caribbean opens up: The development of Caribbean tourism infrastructure in the 1960s created a new winter charter market, complementing the Mediterranean summer season.
Professional charter management: Pioneers like Detlef von Eiberg — grandfather of Bluebnc's founders — began establishing professional charter operations, creating the frameworks of fleet management, contract standardisation, and service quality that would define the industry.
The MYBA Era
The formation of MYBA (originally the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association) in 1984 was a watershed moment. MYBA established the charter contract that bears its name, creating a standardised legal framework that professionalised the industry and gave both charterers and owners confidence in the transaction. The MYBA contract remains the global standard today.
The Digital Revolution
The 21st century brought digital transformation to yacht chartering. Online yacht listings, virtual tours, digital contracts, and social media marketing have made chartering more accessible and transparent than ever before. Companies like Bluebnc Yachting have embraced this digital revolution while maintaining the personal service and human expertise that define the best charter experiences.
The Industry Today
Today, the global yacht charter industry is estimated to be worth over $15 billion annually, with thousands of yachts available for charter across every ocean. The fleet ranges from 20-metre motor yachts to 100-metre+ megayachts, and destinations span from the Mediterranean and Caribbean to the Arctic, Antarctic, and beyond.
At Bluebnc Yachting, we are proud to continue the tradition established by Detlef von Eiberg in the 1960s, combining decades of family heritage with modern innovation to deliver exceptional charter experiences worldwide.
