Your First Superyacht Charter: Everything You Need to Know

Chartering a superyacht for the first time is one of life's most exciting experiences — and one that can feel daunting without the right guidance. At Bluebnc Yachting, we have helped hundreds of first-time charterers navigate the process, and this comprehensive guide distils everything we have learned into a single resource.

Why Charter a Superyacht?

A yacht charter offers something no hotel, resort, or cruise ship can match: complete freedom combined with five-star luxury. You wake each morning in a new location, chosen by you. Your crew of professionals — captain, chef, stewardess, engineers — exists solely to create your perfect experience. Every meal is prepared to your preferences, every activity arranged around your schedule, and every destination selected to match your interests.

Unlike a cruise ship with thousands of passengers and fixed itineraries, a private yacht charter puts you in control. Want to linger at a beautiful anchorage for an extra day? Done. Prefer to skip a port and find a secluded bay instead? Your captain knows exactly where to go. Craving a specific dish for dinner? Your chef will source the finest local ingredients to prepare it.

Choosing the Right Yacht

The yacht you choose will define your charter experience, so it is essential to match the vessel to your needs. Here are the key factors to consider:

Size and Type: Motor yachts from 20–30 metres are ideal for couples or small groups of up to 6 guests, offering intimacy and agility. Yachts from 30–50 metres accommodate 8–12 guests in greater luxury, with more space, more crew, and more amenities. Superyachts above 50 metres provide the ultimate in space and service, with features like cinemas, spas, helipads, and extensive water toy collections.

Motor vs. Sailing: Motor yachts offer speed, stability, and spacious interiors, making them the most popular choice for charter. Sailing yachts provide a more romantic, wind-powered experience but with smaller interiors and a reliance on weather conditions. Catamarans offer exceptional stability and shallow draft, ideal for destinations like the Bahamas and Caribbean.

Crew Quality: The crew makes or breaks a charter. At Bluebnc, we know the crews on our yachts personally and can match you with a team whose style suits your preferences — whether you want attentive, formal service or a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.

Understanding Charter Costs

Yacht charter pricing has two main components:

The Charter Fee: This is the weekly rate for the yacht and crew. Rates vary enormously based on yacht size, age, reputation, and season. As a guide:

  • 20–30m yachts: €15,000–€50,000/week
  • 30–50m yachts: €50,000–€200,000/week
  • 50m+ superyachts: €200,000–€1,000,000+/week

The APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance): Typically 25–35% of the charter fee, paid before the charter begins. This covers fuel, food and beverages, marina fees, shore excursions, and other running expenses. The captain manages the APA and provides a detailed accounting at the end. Any unused funds are returned to you.

Additional Costs: Crew gratuity (10–20% of charter fee, industry standard), transfers to/from the yacht, and any special requests.

The Charter Contract

All Bluebnc charters use the MYBA Charter Agreement, the international gold standard. As MYBA E-Contract subscribers, we use the latest digital version. The contract covers:

  • Charter period, delivery and redelivery ports
  • Charter fee and payment schedule (typically 50% deposit, 50% balance 4 weeks before)
  • APA amount and management
  • Cancellation terms and insurance requirements
  • Responsibilities of charterer and owner

What to Expect On Board

Embarkation Day: You will typically board between 3pm and 5pm. The crew will welcome you with champagne, give you a tour of the yacht, and discuss your preferences for the week — dietary requirements, activity interests, preferred wake-up times, and itinerary wishes.

A Typical Day: There is no such thing as a typical day on charter — that is the beauty of it. But a day might unfold like this: wake to fresh coffee and pastries on the sundeck as the yacht cruises to a new anchorage. Morning swim and water sports. Lunch prepared by your chef, served on the aft deck. Afternoon exploring a coastal town by tender. Sundowners as the yacht repositions for the evening. Dinner under the stars, prepared from ingredients sourced at the local market that morning.

Disembarkation: Typically by 10am on the final morning, allowing time for the crew to prepare for the next charter.

Choosing Your Destination

The destination should match the season and your interests:

Mediterranean (May–October): The world's most popular charter region. The Western Med (Balearics, French Riviera, Sardinia, Amalfi Coast) offers glamour, culture, and cuisine. The Eastern Med (Greece, Croatia, Turkey) offers history, natural beauty, and value.

Caribbean (November–April): The winter charter capital. The BVI offers easy cruising, St. Barths offers glamour, the Grenadines offer unspoiled beauty, and the Bahamas offer the world's clearest waters.

Exotic Destinations: The Maldives, Thailand, Norway, and other destinations offer unique experiences for the adventurous charterer.
