Charter vs Buying: The Financial Case for Chartering a Superyacht

A clear-eyed financial comparison of chartering versus owning a superyacht — annual costs, usage patterns, and why chartering often makes more sense.

The Economics of Chartering vs Owning

The question "Should I charter or buy?" is one that many HNWI and UHNWI clients ask. While yacht ownership offers undeniable pleasures, the financial reality often makes chartering the more rational choice — even for those who can easily afford to buy.

The True Cost of Yacht Ownership

The purchase price of a yacht is just the beginning. The widely cited rule of thumb is that annual running costs equal approximately 10% of the yacht's purchase value. For a €20 million, 40-metre motor yacht, this means approximately €2 million per year in:

Annual Cost CategoryEstimated Amount
Crew salaries & benefits€400,000–€600,000
Insurance€150,000–€250,000
Maintenance & repairs€300,000–€500,000
Fuel & lubricants€150,000–€300,000
Marina berth fees€100,000–€250,000
Management fees€100,000–€150,000
Provisions & supplies€50,000–€100,000
Miscellaneous€50,000–€100,000
Total Annual Cost€1.3M–€2.25M

Add depreciation (typically 5–10% per year on the hull value) and the true annual cost of ownership can exceed €3 million.

The Charter Alternative

For the same €2 million annual budget, a charterer could enjoy:

  • Four weeks on a comparable 40-metre yacht at €120,000/week = €480,000 in charter fees
  • Plus APA of approximately €150,000
  • Plus gratuity of approximately €70,000
  • Total: approximately €700,000 for four weeks of pure luxury

That leaves €1.3 million in savings — every year. And the charterer enjoys additional advantages:

Variety: Charter a different yacht every time, in a different destination. Try a 50-metre in the Med this summer and a sailing yacht in the Caribbean next winter.

No management burden: No crew management, no maintenance decisions, no insurance negotiations, no berth hunting.

No depreciation risk: The yacht's value is someone else's concern.

Flexibility: Charter when and where you want, with no commitment to a specific vessel or schedule.

When Ownership Makes Sense

Ownership is justified when:

  • You will use the yacht for more than 8–12 weeks per year
  • You want a highly personalised vessel designed to your exact specifications
  • The yacht will generate charter income when not in personal use
  • You value the emotional satisfaction of owning a yacht

The Hybrid Approach

Many of our clients adopt a hybrid approach: they charter for several years to refine their preferences, then purchase a yacht that perfectly matches their needs. Some continue to charter in destinations where their own yacht is not positioned, enjoying the best of both worlds.

At Bluebnc Yachting, we offer both charter and brokerage services, allowing us to advise clients objectively on the best approach for their circumstances.
