Question 1

What are the best Greek islands for a yacht charter?

Accepted Answer

The best Greek islands for yacht charters include the Cyclades (Mykonos, Santorini, Paros, Milos), the Saronic Gulf (Hydra, Spetses, Poros) for shorter charters, and the Dodecanese (Rhodes, Kos, Symi) for fewer crowds. The Ionian Islands (Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos) on the west coast offer calmer waters ideal for families.

Question 2

How much does a yacht charter in Greece cost per week?

Accepted Answer

Greek yacht charters range from €20,000 to €250,000+ per week, offering some of the best value in the Mediterranean. A 30-metre motor yacht averages €35,000-€65,000 per week in high season. Greece's lower marina fees and provisioning costs mean the APA typically adds just 20-30%, making it more affordable than the western Mediterranean.

Question 3

When is the best time to charter a yacht in Greece?

Accepted Answer

The best time for a Greek yacht charter is May to October. June and September offer warm weather (28-32°C), warm seas (24-26°C), and manageable Meltemi winds. July and August are peak season with the strongest Meltemi winds in the Cyclades, which experienced sailors enjoy but can affect comfort on smaller yachts.

Question 4

What is the Meltemi wind and does it affect yacht charters?

Accepted Answer

The Meltemi is a strong northerly wind that blows across the Aegean Sea from June to September, typically reaching 20-30 knots. It primarily affects the Cyclades and eastern Aegean. Experienced charter crews plan itineraries around the Meltemi, using island lee sides for calm anchorages. The Ionian and Saronic islands are largely sheltered from these winds.

Question 5

Can I island-hop by yacht in Greece?

Accepted Answer

Greece is the world's premier island-hopping destination by yacht, with over 6,000 islands and islets to explore. A typical 7-day Cyclades charter visits 5-7 islands, with daily sailing of 15-30 nautical miles. Unlike ferry-based island hopping, a private yacht lets you discover hidden coves, arrive at each island on your own schedule, and avoid crowded ports.

Question 6

Do I need a special permit to charter a yacht in Greece?

Accepted Answer

No special permit is needed for a crewed yacht charter in Greece — your professional crew handles all maritime documentation. Greece requires charter yachts to carry a DEKPA (transit log) which your captain manages. For bareboat charters, you need an ICC (International Certificate of Competence) or equivalent sailing licence.
