Charter Guides/Packing Guide

What to Pack for a Yacht Charter

The definitive packing guide for your luxury yacht holiday.

The Golden Rule: Soft-Sided Luggage Only

This is the single most important packing rule for any yacht charter. Hard-shell suitcases cannot be stored aboard — yacht cabins have custom-shaped storage compartments designed for soft bags. Use duffel bags, garment bags, or collapsible travel bags. Your crew will unpack everything for you on arrival and store your empty bags.

The Essential Packing Checklist

Whether you are chartering in the Mediterranean, Caribbean, or Southeast Asia, this checklist covers everything you need. We have refined it over decades of client feedback and crew recommendations. The key principle is to pack light — most superyachts offer daily laundry service, so you need far fewer outfits than you might expect.

Sun and Sea Protection

Sun protection is critical on the water where UV reflection intensifies exposure. Many charter yachts now require reef-safe sunscreen to protect marine ecosystems and prevent staining of teak decks and upholstery.

Reef-safe mineral sunscreen (SPF 50+)
Wide-brimmed sun hat
Quality polarised sunglasses (with retainer strap)
Rash guard / UV protection shirt
After-sun aloe vera gel
Lip balm with SPF

Documents and Electronics

Keep essential documents accessible. Your charter broker will advise on specific visa requirements for your itinerary, particularly for multi-country Mediterranean cruises.

Passport (valid 6+ months beyond travel dates)
Travel insurance documents
Charter contract and itinerary
Credit card for APA top-ups
Phone with waterproof case
Camera with waterproof housing
Universal power adapter
Portable battery pack

Health and Wellness

While most superyachts carry a basic first aid kit, bring any personal medications and items you rely on regularly.

Prescription medications (in original packaging)
Seasickness remedies (patches, bands, or tablets)
Basic first aid items (plasters, antihistamines)
Insect repellent (for shore excursions)
Personal toiletries (yacht provides basics)
Motion sickness wristbands

What NOT to Bring

Just as important as knowing what to pack is knowing what to leave behind. These items will either not fit, damage the yacht, or simply are not needed.

Hard-shell suitcases (will not fit in cabin storage)
Black-soled shoes (mark teak decks permanently)
Chemical sunscreen (damages reefs and upholstery)
Excessive luggage (you will not need it)
High heels (dangerous on deck, damage teak)
Hair dryers and straighteners (provided aboard)
Towels (yacht provides premium towels)
Water sports equipment (fully stocked aboard)

Seasonal Packing Differences

Your packing list should adapt to your destination and season. Mediterranean summers are warm but evenings can be breezy. Caribbean winters are consistently warm. Northern European or Norwegian fjord charters require layering for cooler temperatures.

Season / RegionTemperatureKey Additions
Mediterranean Summer (Jun–Sep)25–35°CLight linens, sun protection, evening layers
Caribbean Winter (Nov–Apr)24–30°CMinimal layers, reef shoes, rain jacket
Mediterranean Shoulder (Apr–May, Oct)18–25°CLight sweater, windbreaker, longer trousers
Northern Europe (Jun–Aug)12–22°CFleece, waterproof jacket, warm base layers
Southeast Asia (Nov–Apr)26–33°CLightweight fabrics, modest cover-ups for temples

Insider Tips from Our Charter Team

Send your preference sheet early

Your crew will pre-stock your favourite drinks, snacks, and toiletries. The more detail you provide, the more personalised your experience.

Pack a small day bag

A lightweight crossbody or tote for shore excursions. You will want something to carry sunscreen, a camera, and a water bottle when exploring ports.

Bring a waterproof phone case

Essential for tender rides, water sports, and beach club visits. A good waterproof case lets you capture moments without risking your device.

Roll, do not fold

Rolling clothes saves space in soft bags and reduces wrinkles. Your stewardess will press anything that needs it once aboard.

Leave room for shopping

Mediterranean ports are filled with boutiques and markets. Leave 20% of your bag empty for souvenirs and finds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring hard-shell suitcases on a yacht?

No. Hard-shell luggage cannot be stored aboard most yachts. Use soft-sided duffel bags or collapsible travel bags that can be folded and stowed in limited cabin storage. Your crew will unpack for you on arrival.

Do I need formal attire for a yacht charter?

Smart casual is the standard for evening dining aboard. For Mediterranean charters, a linen shirt and trousers or a summer dress is appropriate. Only bring formal wear if your itinerary includes a specific event like the Monaco Grand Prix gala.

What shoes should I bring?

White-soled or non-marking deck shoes are essential — dark soles leave marks on teak decks. Bring comfortable sandals for shore excursions and dressier shoes for evenings ashore. Leave high heels at home.

Should I bring my own water sports equipment?

No. Charter yachts come fully equipped with water toys including jet skis, paddleboards, snorkelling gear, wakeboards, and inflatable toys. Your crew will set everything up for you.

What about sunscreen?

Bring reef-safe, mineral-based sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide). Chemical sunscreens damage coral reefs and can stain teak decks and upholstery. Many charter yachts now require reef-safe products only.

How much should I pack?

Less than you think. A 7-day charter typically requires 3-4 daytime outfits, 3-4 evening outfits, swimwear, and a light layer. Laundry service is available daily aboard most superyachts.
